Creating a Web Page in Dreamweaver

Macromedia Dreamweaver offers a powerful way to create Web pages and Web Sites. Follow these steps to create a basic Web page.

Opening Dreamweaver
Select Start then Programs, Macromedia Dreamweaver and then select Dreamweaver from the list of programs displayed (it may be inside another folder).

Creating a New Web Page
To create a new Web page, choose File, then New.

Now is a good time to give your Web page a meaningful title. Under the Modify menu, select Page Properties. In the Title box type in the name of your Web page, and click OK.

Formatting the Text
Buttons for formatting the text can be accessed from the Properties window. Properties box

To view this window if it is not visible, go to the Window menu choose Properties. Before using the features in the Properties window, you must highlight the text you wish to change. For example, to change your text to bold, first highlight it on your page, then click on the B icon in the Properties window.

You can also access the full range of formatting options by going to the Text menu and then choosing Font or Style.

Inserting Digital Images
From the Insert menu, select Image. In the Select Image Source dialog box, locate the desired image. Click on the Down Arrow to the right of the Look In box, choose the correct drive, go to the desired folder, and select the image.

If this image is outside of your Web site, Dreamweaver will ask if you want to save a copy of the image inside of your Web. Click Yes.

Click yes.

Dreamweaver will then give you the option of renaming your image or changing the folder where it will be saved. Make any necessary changes and then click OK.

Creating a Hyperlink
You can use the Make Link command to create links to Web pages, links to bookmarks within your page, or insert an email link. Type in the text you want to serve as the link. For example, for the text for the link to our training Web site, type: UW TRIO Training. Use the mouse to select this text. Right-click on the selected text and choose Make Link from the menu. The Select File dialog box will come up (as shown below).

In the URL box, type the address of the Web page you want to link to. In this case type: http://www.mysite.com/train. Another way to add a link is to select the text, and enter the address in the Link field of the Properties window.

Saving your Web page
To save your Web page select File then Save As. At the top of the Save In dialog box, locate the desired drive and folder on this drive.

Choose a short name (8 characters or less, all lower case, no symbols or spaces for maximum compatibility) for your Web page and click Save.
